Telegram is based out of Dubai, is a safe haven for extremist groups, is lax on child pornography, and has supported the Russian government in supressing the opposition. Not a good service, Lon.

Unfortunately telegraph is censoring news media from Russia; RT and Sputnik. I don’t endorse Putin’s actions, but we need to hear news from both sides, not just Western media (propaganda). 🇷🇺☮️🇺🇦

Germany tried to threaten Gab, to censor or else they will be banned from Germany. Gab of course said no they will not censor and Germany….gave up, and did nothing.

I prefer Signal. The only information they have is the last time you logged on, and when you created an account.

Lon – MoCA question: Watching your goCoax MoCA videos, I noticed that you routinely reference the BAMF brand splitters. However I see that the 3-way variants are no longer available on amazon, and the 2-way models are steadily going up in price. In your opinion, would I be just as well served with the Cable Matters splitters since they are marked as "MoCA" and state a frequency of 5-2450 MHz? Also, what if another brand of splitter has a similar frequency but doesn't state that it's MoCA certified? Thank you in advance for your time.

I'm a big fan of Telegram's features and am intrigued by all the concern about privacy. Telegram offers personal conversations and also these massive groups and channels with the ability for the user to use any device and access the complete history of all conversations. They do this because these are features people want. Unfortunately, it just is not possible to secure it like a "secret chat." If you want totally private group conversations you will need to find another platform and accept their limited features.

This was super helpful in understanding what all had happened with Telegram in the past and the current state of the platform!

Have you already done one of these for Discord? I liked to think I was pretty tech savvy but I’m having a heck of a time understanding exactly what Discord is, how it works, what to use it for – honestly the interface is a bit intimidating I think.

If you haven’t, that might be a helpful one for novices to the Discord platform? (If you have, the YouTube algorithm didn’t want to show me search results for it! 😛 )

I remember when telegram was new and people were using it for piracy. You could find movie groups and download movies but the pirates got greedy and stopped posting movies on their free groups and just posted trailers and said the full movies were on their paid group. That aspect of Telegram didn't last long.

Why aren't people demanding security? This seems like a large step backwards. The spent a lot of developer time adding their custom security layer which is probably no security at all.

This Telegram thing just sounds fishy. Especially requiring your phone number. And then we learn that Arnold Schwarzenegger loves the Russian people – who put and keep Putin in power.

I've had Telegram since it began almost a decade ago. It is indispensable to my life. All my friends and family also have it.

Thanks Lon for covering this – always informative and well explained. My best friend in Ukraine uses Telegram and she asked me to use it because we believed it was encrypted. It was important to her that we talk securely and privately. Its very interesting what you covered here.

Banning telegram is very hard. Russian govt did not succeed at that. They broke a lot of services during their ban tho.
